What is Passive House Construction All About?
The History of The Passive House Movement
Passive building got started in the US during the energy crisis of the 1970’s and was later refined by German architects, engineers and home builders as part of the Passive House movement. What began as an effort to reduce energy waste has evolved into a pursuit of the highest possible standards of green design and construction to build homes that are super-energy efficient, of the highest constructed quality, healthy, and in harmony with the environment.
The Principles of Passive Design & Construction
The 5 principles of Passive design and construction include increased-insulation, air-tightness, elimination of points thermal bridges (points of energy loss), large banks of south facing, triple pane glass (to optimize passive solar benefits) and heat recovery ventilation. In addition to careful implementation of these principles, many Valle Group projects are complemented by other sustainability-focused approaches to energy conservation and responsible use of materials that require special certifications. These include Net Zero Energy, LEED and Forest Stewardship Council certification.

PHIUS (Passive House Institute of the US) is the country’s leading training and certification organization for Passive building. PHIUS has a rigorous inspection and evaluation process required to achieve official Passive House Certification. Clients can enjoy the benefits of Passive construction whether they ultimately go for official certification or not.

A Pioneer in Passive
The Valle Group is proud to be considered a pioneer in Passive House building. Our firm built the first Certified Passive House on Cape Cod more than a decade ago. This was one of only 24 such homes in the entire country at the time. We have gone on to build many more Passive Homes since then.
