Energy-Efficient Updates you Can Make this Week
Winter is still here, bringing with it higher heating bills! It’s easy to get sticker shock once the temperatures drop and the energy required to heat your home increases. We want to share with you a few ideas to reduce your energy and increase your savings. Here are some simple things you can do this week to make your home more energy-efficient.
- Get a programmable thermostat. Most people have one in their homes, but if you don’t, it’s time to invest. A thermostat that you can program will allow you to change settings depending on when you’re not at home or sleeping. Most people prefer sleeping in a cooler temperature, so at a minimum, it makes sense to have a thermostat that will allow this to happen automatically.
- Turn your heat down. Sounds simple but you might be surprised at the difference a few degrees can make. Start by turning your thermostat down one degree and go from there. Looking for a different heating option, check out our recent blog post.
- Turn your lights off. Again, this is a simple task but one that is easily overlooked. Remember to turn the lights off when you’re not in the room. The same goes for other items you’re not using that absorb energy, like a fan.
- Put on a storm door. A storm door is a type of door that is installed in front of an exterior access door to protect it from bad weather and prevent heat loss. Storm doors generally have interchangeable glass panels and window screen panels for the warm months.to provide fresh air and prevent flying insects from entering the home.
- Stop drafts with an inexpensive kit. Any home improvement store will carry the necessary materials to treat your windows and doors for drafts. From special tape to weatherstripping and insulated curtains, investing in a few specialized products can significantly limit the drafts throughout your home.
