Passive/High Performance Construction
Is Net Zero Energy For You?
What Does Net Zero Energy Mean?
Net Zero energy building is about achieving optimal efficiency in construction and producing a home’s energy on site. Typically this means there is energy being produced by solar (most commonly), wind, hydro or other clean renewable source. Net Zero is achieved when, over the course of a year, the energy produced on-site is equal to or greater than the total amount of energy consumed on-site. Naturally, it is easier to achieve Net Zero when the home is built according to the exacting standards of Passive/high performance construction since energy is conserved by the nature of the constructed building itself.
What Are The Benefits of Making Your New Home Net Zero?
In addition to the obvious benefits to the planet (less carbon emissions), there are also significant benefits to the homeowner. On the financial side, while Net Zero homes may be more expensive to build, the ability to eliminate energy utility bills is likely to offset the additional cost over time and ultimately put the homeowner in a savings positive position. Further, utility and government incentives can also play a role in reducing costs and increasing savings.
How to Get Started with Net Zero Construction
If you are planning to achieve Net Zero, the first step is to choose both an architect and a builder who are experienced in this type of design and construction. The Valle Group would be happy to serve as a resource.
